Wildlife Safety

At Fern Flower - Nature School, we celebrate the outdoors and the animals that inhabit it. However, it’s essential to ensure that children, educators, and wildlife coexist safely in the natural environment. This section outlines key practices and safety measures to protect both the children and the wildlife they encounter.

General Guidelines for Wildlife Safety

  1. Supervision: Always ensure that children are closely supervised when in outdoor settings. Animals can appear suddenly, and quick reactions are required to prevent accidents.

  2. Respecting Wildlife: Teach children to observe wildlife from a distance. No feeding or attempting to interact with animals, as this can be harmful to both the animal and the child.

  3. Know Local Wildlife: Educate children and staff about the types of wildlife that may be found in the area. This includes animals such as squirrels, raccoons, bears, snakes, and more. Knowing what animals are present helps in understanding what precautions to take.

  4. Avoiding Hazards: Instruct children to stay away from areas where dangerous wildlife may be hiding, such as tall grass, brush, or under logs.

  5. Personal Safety: Educate children on what to do if they encounter an animal. This includes calmly backing away and alerting an educator.

Preventative Measures

  1. Keep Campsites Clean: Ensure all food, trash, and scented items are stored securely in wildlife-proof containers.

  2. Clear Signage: Place wildlife safety signs in areas frequented by children, such as entrances to the outdoor learning spaces or areas with known wildlife activity.

  3. Safety Drills: Conduct regular wildlife safety drills so children and staff know how to respond in case of an encounter.

At your daycare, safety is a top priority. Our Monthly Fire/Evacuation & Wildlife Drill Practice Record ensures that both your staff and children are prepared for emergencies—whether it’s a fire, evacuation, or even a wildlife encounter.
