First Aid in Daycare
It's crucial to have your First Aid certification up to date to ensure the safety and well-being of children in your care. Accidents can happen at any time, and being prepared can make all the difference.
First Aid Kit Checklist
Your First Aid kit should accompany you everywhere, whether indoors or outdoors, including during field trips.
Keep Your First Aid Certification Up to Date
It's essential to ensure that your first aid certification is current. Display it proudly in your classroom for all staff and parents to see, so they know you're always prepared to handle emergencies.

My best tip: Always have a portable first aid kit in your emergency everyday backpack for quick access during outings. Additionally, keep a larger first aid kit in the classroom for everyday use and emergencies that may arise within the facility.
Portable and Classroom First Aid Kits
In an emergency, every second counts. Make sure everyone knows where the first aid kits are by:
Using Large Stickers: Place bright, easy-to-read stickers on cabinets with "First Aid" labels.
Mark on Fire Escape Maps: Ensure the first aid kit’s location is clearly shown on your Fire Escape Maps.
Marking the Location of First Aid
Printable cards with emergency phone numbers, including 911, poison control, and others.

Emergency Preparedness
Consider having an emergency kit for large-scale situations such as lockdowns or nature disasters. This should include supplies like water, non-perishable food, blankets, flashlights, and more.
At your daycare, safety is a top priority. Our Monthly Fire/Evacuation Drill Practice Record helps you ensure your staff and children are always ready for an emergency.

Additional Items for Your First Aid Kits
Here are some of my favorite additional first aid kit items to ensure you're fully prepared:
Sliver Remover: Essential for removing splinters quickly and safely.
Eye Washing Station: In case of irritants or accidents involving the eyes.
Nail Clippers: For quick fixes when needed.
LifeVac for Choking: A must-have tool to assist in case of choking.
Lockbox for Medication: Safely store any medications needed, away from children.
Naloxone Kit: For emergencies involving opioid overdoses.
First Aid Book: Handy reference to guide you through common and serious injuries.
EpiPen: Especially important if toddlers are trying new foods for the first time, as they may be at risk for severe allergic reactions.
AED (Automated External Defibrillator): If funds allow, this life-saving device should be available for serious medical emergencies.
